Stiles/Derek Guardian Angel AU
☞ in which Derek is still a werewolf and Stiles is his guardian angel.

Derek looks up at Stiles, annoyed, “I don’t believe in any of that religious crap.”

“Don’t think of me as an angel then. Just know that I’m the guy that will save your ass every time you fuck up.”

“Are you even allowed to swear?”

A smirk spreads across Stiles’s face, “I’ve picked up a few bad habits.”

“What do I have to do to get you to leave?”

“I dunno.”  Stiles shrugs, snagging another fry.  “If I manage to screw up badly enough to let you actually die, that’d probably do the trick.  I mean, one way or another I wouldn’t be around to hassle you anymore.”

“Any way short of mortal peril?”

“You know,” Stiles says, elbow braced on the scratched Formica as he points  a ketchup-laden fry at Derek’s face, “you’re gonna start making me think you don’t like me very much.”

“I like you fine,” Derek mutters.  He keeps his eyes on his book, away from the golden ones still settled on him like a heavy weight.  “I just think that if you’re a delusional high school kid you should be focused on classes.  Maybe getting some psychiatric help.”

“Hmph.”  Stiles reaches for another handful of fries.  “And if I’m not?”

Derek glances up then, just for a moment.  “If you’re not, then you definitely have better things to do.”

“Yeah.  You’re probably right.  But here’s the funny thing.”  There’s a loud slurping sound as Stiles sucks up the last of his soda.  “People don’t get guardian angels because they deserve them; they get them ‘cause they need them.”

“Oh come on,” Derek snorts.  “You’re not really gonna give me that ‘you don’t think you deserve to be saved’ bullshit, are you?”

“First of all, you’re addicted to reruns of Antiques Roadshow, you in no way get to critique my taste in television.  Secondly, I know you don’t think you deserve it.  But it’s not our place to pick and choose; we don’t have the right to decide who is or isn’t worthy of salvation.”

“Is that what you’re supposed to be?”  Derek closes his book at last to stare at the kid who looks too young and too old all at once.  “My salvation?”

“Nope.”  Stiles grins, licking salt and grease from his fingers.  “I’m just the guy keeping you alive long enough to find it for yourself.”
